High-Performance Felt Systems We Install
We use modern, high-performance bitumen felt systems designed for durability and long-lasting waterproof protection. Typically installed in multiple layers, including underlay and a mineral-finished cap sheet, these systems are torch-applied to create a strong, sealed surface. This ensures excellent resistance to the UK weather while delivering a reliable and cost-effective flat roofing solution.
Torch-On vs Self-Adhered Felt Roofing Systems
Felt roofing can be installed using torch-on or self-adhered methods, each suited to different project needs. Torch-on felt is heat-applied to create a strong, fully bonded seal, offering maximum durability and long-term performance. Self-adhered felt uses advanced adhesive backing, making it a safer, flame-free option ideal for sensitive areas, while still providing reliable waterproof protection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Felt flat roofing is a bitumen-based waterproof membrane installed in multiple layers to form a durable, weather-resistant roof covering. Modern systems are typically torch-on, where heat is used to bond the base, reinforcement, and cap sheets to a prepared timber deck such as OSB3 or plywood.
A high-performance felt roof usually consists of a 3-layer system: base layer, reinforced intermediate layer, and mineral cap sheet. This build-up increases strength, improves waterproofing, and enhances resistance to UV exposure and mechanical damage.
Torch-on felt is heat-fused to create a fully bonded, highly durable waterproof seal, making it the most common choice for long-term flat roofing. Self-adhesive felt is cold-applied and safer in restricted environments but generally offers lower durability and is less commonly used for high-spec installations.
Felt roofing must be installed on a clean, dry, and structurally sound deck, typically OSB3 or exterior-grade plywood with adequate falls for drainage. A vapour control layer is often added beneath insulation to prevent condensation build-up and protect the roof structure from moisture damage.
Modern felt roofing systems are designed to handle thermal movement, weather exposure, and seasonal expansion without splitting or blistering when correctly installed. Lifespan typically ranges from 15–25 years, with occasional inspections recommended to check seams, debris build-up, and surface wear.
Most felt roof failures are caused by poor installation, inadequate surface preparation, or failure to provide proper drainage falls. Over time, standing water, UV exposure, and movement in the roof deck can also lead to cracking, blistering, or seam separation if not correctly detailed.
